Separator

Separator

As opposed to depth filtration principles, equipment categorised in this section utilises accelerated sedimentation principle to separate the solid from the liquid by capitalising on the density weight of the suspension. Main operational difference lies on its capability to process high volume of slurry continuously.

These equipments are characterised by its high rotational velocity as high as 4000rpm that will generate centrifugal force a high as 4000G at which solid particles shall be separated distinctly from the liquid phase. Further development sees a more advance system that is capable separating 2 immiscible liquid phases and 1 solid phase, which is commonly known as three-phase decanter or tri-canter.

A decanter is normally termed horizontal decanter due to the horizontal arrangement of its rotational axis whilst other type of high-speed separator is also designed with vertical rotational axis for distinctly difference purpose.

Decanter is mostly differentiated by its application to separate large amount of suspended solids, in other words dewatering application while vertical separator is used for clarifying application with much less suspended solids. Decanter can process up to 350-m3/hr sludge (assumptions apply), while vertical separator can process up ton 40-m3/hr liquid stream (assumptions apply).

Decanter application includes sludge dewatering of mine waste, water treatment plant, gypsum, palm oil, etc. Vertical separator application includes milk skimming, chemical liquid clarification, palm oil degumming, etc.
