Contrary to filter press, belt press was developed as means of continuous filtration method to answer the challenges of high-capacity processing. Two or three filter belts are designed to compress each other in continuous operation to deliver continuous dewatered cake. It is still under depth filtration family whereby the equipment relies on belt filters porosity to perform separation.

A belt press is designed to handle slurry up to in order of 80-m3/hour (assumptions apply) which is relatively difficult to be handled by a single filter press of an equal capital cost. Its inherently simple construction due to ‘open non-enclosed’ design makes it popular choice for handling biological based sludges.

Belt press however, utilises large amount of water to perform continuous belt filter washing which could be the major hindering factor to operational efficiency. Relatively more turbid filtrate compared to filter press is also expected due to the use of more porous filters allowing smaller particles to pass the unit.

Latest development has improved belt presses to achieve high solid content cakes by employing higher compression pressure which could be a good alternative to filter press in certain application.
