Screw Press

Screw press is considered as recently developed separation equipment as compared to belt and filter press. Although it does not utilise filter media for separation process, it is still categorised under depth filtration. It is because the filtration is done by managing the gap between the screw and rings (both fixed and moving) therefore creating ‘filter’ that can capture the solids entrained in the liquid mixture.

Relatively has lower processing capacity than belt press but higher than filter press, screw press is suitable mainly for dewatering of organic and oily sludges. With automatic operation, screw press is a popular choice for medium capacity dewatering with up to approx. 50-m3/hour (assumptions apply) sludge flowrate.

With the absence of woven filter, screw press consumes much less cleaning water to clean the metal rings. However, these multiple metal rings are rather prone to damage or deformation when dried sludge is squeezed in between by the driving screw. Therefore, proper maintenance/cleaning is essential in ensuring long life operation.

The latest development of screw press is the invention of ‘twin screw’ that work in a single module. This arrangement has increased the dewatering efficiency that could see a cake produced having approx. 30% dry solid content which is almost similar to filter press.
